Wine and dine
Food and wine pairing comes to the fore at the Marine Hotel in Hermanus
A new series of food-and-wine pairing dinners will see the Marine Hotel in Hermanus, part of the Liz McGrath Collection, partner with local winemakers to showcase the rich wine offering of the region.
The dinners each focus on one winery per evening, hosted by the respective winemaker and catered by Head Chef Tronette Dippenaar, who in consultation with the winemaker conceives a menu to match the vintages that have been selected for the occasion. The evening is an intimate affair, and allows the diners to learn about the wine farm and its terroir, winemaking techniques and heritage as the winemaker explains each pairing and the menu consists of a series of carefully considered courses that show off the wine’s attributes as well as the skills of Chef Tronette.
The evening begins with convivial pre-drinks and canapés in the bar/lounge and then continues in The Pavilion restaurant, after a short welcome from The Marine’s general manager, Sebastian Berinato, Head Chef Tronette Dippenaar, and the winemaker of the evening. The four-course menu concludes with a lucky draw. The Food & Wine Pairing Dinner is R495 per person.
The most recent in the series – in collaboration with Bouchard Finlayson – saw a series of the winery’s renowned red and white wines presented by respected winemaker Peter Finlayson and paired with an elegant French-inspired bistro-style menu, featuring salmon, French onion soup and duck. The beautifully combined dishes and excellent wines make for wonderful way to experience the hotel’s hospitality and get more familiar with the region’s winemaking prestige.
To make the most of the occasion, stay over at the hotel – drink in the sea view from your luxurious suite before dinner or explore the town. The next day enjoy the wonderful buffet-style continental and hot breakfast menu, and take a post-meal stroll along the famous Hermanus cliff path, or indulge in a relaxing spa treatment.
