A star lineup of design minds share their insight in Johannesburg this month

The Design Assemblage brings together change-makers and leaders in various fields to share creative ideas and catalyse conversations for design as a force for change. Through a programme of events – including lectures, workshops and masterclasses – the TDA aims to curate a ‘creative clash of different design disciplines’ and facilitate the sharing of knowledge and intellectual expansion. These expert lectures and workshops are open to the design community and other interested parties, free of charge. For October, the theme is Connecting Minds, Creating The Future – Opportunity, Sustainability, Collaboration.

On the lineup for October are the following events:

Lauren Clark, concept developer

On Tuesday, October 8 at 11am, you can enjoy Sensory Awareness, a masterclass by Lauren Clark from St Gobain, who will present recent work on psychoacoustics and how people’s response to sound in office environments varies according to their personalities and sensory thresholds. “Understanding how the brain responds uniquely to sensory input helps employees make better choices of where and when to work and to develop empathy across teams,” she says.

1 Discovery Place

Meet the architects and interior designers behind 1 Discovery Place when they lead a tour of the building on Thursday, October 10, at 10:30am. Boogertman + Partners, together with Paragon Interface, will host an exclusive tour of the building and share in their vision, design process and execution.

Paul Ballen, ice-cream brand founder

Paul Ballen from Paul’s Homemade Ice-Cream will take you on a journey through ice-cream culture on Thursday October 17 at 3pm. Having grown up travelling regularly to the US, courtesy of his father’s photographic career, Ballen was exposed to what he describes as a very American part of daily life – ice cream. After receiving an ice-cream machine for a birthday he began his own exploration, which resulted in what is now a super premium ice-cream brand.

Edward Colle, CEO Belgotex

Join Belgotex’s CEO Edward Colle on Thursday, October 24 at 3pm as he presents Business of Design: Journey of a Brand, in which he will give insight into the success of the company’s recent re-brand and the importance and purpose of design for innovation and as a business imperative.

Ricky Frankental, entrepreneur

The final masterclass for the month, on Tuesday October 29 at 11am, is Writing on Walls which examines the freedom that comes from in brainstorming. It will be presented by Frankental co-founder of Lemon, which supplies a variety of design and office products. His take on the collaborative workspace trend is that it’s on the rise and that “business is adapting more and more to agile and interactive spaces”.

TDA’s Wine by Design

Wine by Design sets out to explore the winemakers’ process and wine-label design and share unique stories with the design community, through a series of intimate tasting evenings. The featured winery on Thursday, October 31 at 5:30pm is De Grendel, the award-winning venue situated in the Durbanville Wine Valley.

The talks are free, but book your spot on Quicket. For more on the programme visit:
