The Hideaway in Cape Town is a lifestyle gifting paradise
Cape Town’s innovative new factory-shopping space The Hideaway is a lifestyle destination stocking a range of beautiful products sourced from around the country or crafted in-house. Supporting South African entrepreneurs and small businesses in line with a proudly local stance, The Hideaway is open to the public for a unique shopping experience that includes features like an on-site coffee nook and complimentary weekend Morena bubbly tastings, and even occasional live music.
We chatted to Catherine Davies about what makes The Hideaway different, and what you can hope to find in store.
How do you curate your product selection?
Our products are designed and selected based on look and feel, as well as functionality. Most of our products are designed around food and wine, with the idea that they play a role in bringing people together.
Tell us how you came to start your business – what prompted it?
The Hideaway factory shop is the culmination of two wholesale businesses coming together to try and offer products to the public at competitive prices. We had an existing warehouse with lots of stock, and decided to utilise the space and create an offering that wasn’t just about retail but also speaks to the senses (something which people are looking for in tough economic times).
What sets you apart from other decor/gifting businesses?
Our pricing sets us apart, as we offer factory shop pricing, which is somewhere between retail and wholesale. The fact that we also have a running wholesale business on site makes it an interesting retail space, as customers can see the process of how products are made, whilst shopping or having a coffee. Our branding iron process is always a huge hit with customers.
What do you see as your particular strengths?
Our strengths are that we come from a furniture and decor background, and therefore have a knack for finding unique products. Having grown up in the industry, we also have a keen eye for detail, and know what works for the end consumer. We love to support local manufacturers but we also bring in a range of unique basketware from overseas, which most other retailers don’t have on offer.
What products are your most popular?
If cheese boards and chopping boards are your thing, then you have come to the right place. Our range is very diverse, and they come in all shapes, sizes and types of wood. Other products which are hugely popular going into the festive season are our wooden games (dominoes and Jenga), our olive-oil related accessories, Turkish towels, and our champagne candles.
Open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm and on weekends from 9:30am until 2pm. The range is also available online.
