Super Natural | Superhouse, Karen McCartney
Australia-based design and architecture author Karen McCartney has written for British Elle Decoration and The World of Interiors, edited Marie Claire Lifestyle and was founding editor of interiors magazine Inside Out. She is now editorial director of online retailer Temple & Webster.
Her latest title, Superhouse, celebrates architecture and interiors that go beyond the everyday. Houses around the globe, beautifully captured by interiors photographer par excellence, Richard Powers are discussed in detail by Karen following interviews with many of the architects and owners. The criteria for the houses that made the grade were simple, albeit hard to achieve – in short, houses that inspired awe, with a completeness of form, seamless execution and a strong connection to nature. To Karen, the super house has ‘nothing to do with size; instead, it is one that has a strong connection with nature, and that, through the sensitivity of both architect and client, is imbued with mindfulness’.
Why we love it
Staggering designs, innovative use of materials, imaginative use of space – nothing is more inspiring than domestic designs that are created by thinking out of the box. Richard Powers’ images not only capture the structures beautifully, but also the spirit of each.
