Enticing autumn menus are the order of the season in the winelands

With the close of summer comes a host of culinary benefits, in the form of winter menus. Gabriëlskloof Restaurant’s a la carte menu becomes thehearty Blackboard Menu come May, when the focus switches to comforting and feel-good food.

Known for its generous, country-style hospitality, the restaurant’s new menu runs until August, which will give you a few months to venture out to the Overberg, perhaps plan a weekend away in the area, to sample their fare at your leisure.

With its beautiful hilltop location adjacent to the winery, surrounded by picturesque valleyscapes and situated near a large open fireplace, the restaurant is an ideal place to spend a long afternoon.

The new winter menu under the guardianship of Frans Groenewald will see dishes changing daily, making sure that repeat visitors are kept guessing and are offered something exciting each time they pass through. The dishes draw on the region, which Frans took a fresh look at for inspiration when conceiving the lineup.

“To me, the Overberg is about community and collaboration, natural beauty and harmony. I love coming to work and driving through a landscape that gives me peace and makes me curious at the same time,” he says.

Ingrained in the Overberg culture is an authentic and informal generosity, which is something that he wanted to convey through the new menu’s philosophy along with a focus on seasonal produce. “We’ll be punting plant-based dishes, not exclusively of course. But I’d like to show that vegetarian options can be wholesome and satisfying – even with the winter chill about,” says Frans.

Think rustic flavour with French flair – expect dishes such as crispy pork belly, roasts, chick pea-and-lentil salad or chick pea-and lentil-bolognese, big casseroles, soups, grilled trout, wheat risotto or curried wheat salad. On the sweeter side, diners can look forward to chocolate fondant, chocolate mousse, traditional souskluitjies and milk tart tiramisu.

On Sundays a set five-course menu will also be available – at R385pp or R450pp with wine included.
