A lush new inner-city escape, Gorgeous George oozes style and personality
The arty boutique hotel archetype reaches its full potential in Cape Town’s new hideaway – Gorgeous George. A member of the prestigious Design Hotels of the World community (the only one in Cape Town to achieve this title), this new kid on the block combines stylish eclectic spaces and an irreverent urban attitude in adjoining heritage buildings in the heart of the city.
Designed by Studio A, with contributions from a host of SA’s design elite, the interiors are internationally inspired but full of local colour and flavour. Graphic patterns on the walls by artist David Brits, colourful statement furniture, and vibrant artworks make for really exciting spaces. Rooms are simple and luxurious without being fussy – the bathrooms are in chic black and white, the drinks kitchenettes/cabinets are really thoughtfully kitted out (down to fresh lemons, good coffee and well-chosen beverages), and Netflix and Showmax come with the tvs.
The experience lives up to the aesthetic too. Staff are warm and fun and the mood is cheeky and upbeat – you’ll be greeted with ‘Hello Gorgeous’ as you make your way from your suite to the rooftop bar and restaurant.
This is where the space really steps it up too. A partly covered deck, with a jungle of plants and stylish seating hosts diners and drinkers. The pool and loungers overlook the building’s pretty neighbouring buildings. Dining is indoors or out. Inside is a lovely space with different types of seating options – a long dining setup for a big group, small intimate tables and a lounge area-cum-library on the far end. The food is bistro style – small but varied and elegantly executed menu (think line fish, steak, pasta and all the classics for breakfast from waffles to omelettes) and gorgeous cocktails (come summer the rooftop will buzz).
