Behind the scenes
Tour Cape Town’s top architectural firms with Open Studios
An initiative adopted by the architecture community, and now in its seventh year, Open Studios is a Cape Institute for Architecture initiative, and forms part of the Open Design Afrika Festival’s citywide celebration of design from 23-27 October. It was created to educate and expose design lovers to the inner workings of the built environment.
With more studios taking part this year than ever before, the event encourages an engagement with the industry that members of the public don’t often have the opportunity to experience. This year you can take a look behind the curtain of 17 architecture studios across the city on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 October.
The participating studios will be open from 5pm to 8pm, enabling guests to pop by after work, university or school. Each studio will curate its own event – with activities and features including showcases of previous work and future projects, and displays ranging from architectural models and drawings to photographs, films and virtual reality.
The event will take place over two days, as well as across two different hubs in the city – the CBD and the east city/Woodstock, with a route planned between studios in close proximity to one another to allow visitors to move between the venues easily.
The idea is for the event to be both informative and fun and to allow visitors to chat with the members of the firms and meet other likeminded design lovers while exploring the workspaces. All ages are welcome – it’s especially useful for those younger visitors who may be considering architecture as a career path.
Attendance is free, and the full programme is available online.
